Join us for a four-week course led by Sarah Karen into one of the oldest forms of weaving: Backstrap Weaving.
The course will cover a range of techniques from setting up a mini loom, creating and applying a warp, to experimenting with a range of different traditional techniques each week to create your first woven sampler. Materials and yarns will be provided for each session - but you are welcome to bring along any materials you wish to experiment with.
The mini loom, along with a small weaving kit, will be yours to keep at the end of the course. For more information on each session of the course & to book your place please use the Eventbrite link. This course is designed as a safe space to create and learn together; suitable for those who want an introduction to weaving, without any of the complex equipment that is normally needed. No previous experience is necessary. We will be weaving on small laser cut looms based on the traditional backstrap loom - please be aware that this method involves fixing a small loom around your back to weave.
Sarah Karen is a textile artist currently based in Margate and is a
recent associate of Open School East. Her practise explores weaving
and our relationship to it. She is currently working with textile artist
Yemi Awosile as part of this years Margate Festival: NOW 2019.
Upcoming projects include ‘AND’ at Northdown Studios (Margate) &
Off the Loom: A Conversation of Weaving (UCA, Kent)
